How to Avoid Common Beach Hazards in Australia

Whenever you travel, it’s in your best interest to research safety tips for your specific destination. For instance, the area that you’re traveling to could have a high crime rate. Or, there could be insects or animals in the area that pose a threat if you don’t take the necessary precautions.

"Rip currents more deadly than sharks but we don't take them seriously," Rob Brander.

If you’re planning on visiting Australia, you’ve probably heard of threatening spiders, sharks, kangaroos, and crocodiles. Although encountering these things can be dangerous, it’s more likely that you’ll be injured by beach hazards such as rip currents.

Here are three types of waves to look out for while spending time near the ocean:

  • Plunging Waves: Powerful waves that curl over and plunge downward.

  • Surging Waves: Waves that surge quickly on the shoreline.

  • Rip Currents: Narrow currents that can sweep you into the ocean.

The following three safety tips can help you avoid serious injuries while at the beach:

  1. Always keep your arms out in front of you while body surfing.

  2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times - be on the constant lookout for dangerous waves, jellyfish and slippery rocks.

  3. Swim between the set boundaries at all time - these are usually marked with red and yellow flags.
