Accommodation Tips for LGBTQIA+ Travellers

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

If you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community, traveling unfortunately isn’t as simple as booking a hotel and hopping on a plane. This is especially true if you plan on traveling with your partner.

You aren’t going to have the trip of your life unless you feel 100% safe and comfortable with where you’re staying. The sad truth is, there are some hotels out there that aren’t the most welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community.

With that being said, it’s important to do some research before booking the first hotel that pops up on your search results. Here are some helpful accommodation tips for LGBTQ+ travellers:

  • Look for the LGBTQ+ friendly tag on Airbnb: If you prefer staying at Airbnbs instead of hotels, book with a host that uses the LGBTQ+ friendly travel tag.

  • Opt for bigger hotel chains instead of local hotels: Instead of booking a local hotel that you’ve never heard of, opt for well-known hotels such as Hilton or Marriott.

  • Always read the reviews: It never hurts to read the reviews of an accommodation before making a final decision.

If you're traveling in Australia, Wotif is a great resource for finding welcoming hotels.

When in doubt, don’t be afraid to get in touch with the host or hotel staff if you have any questions. Your comfort and safety should be your top priority!
